About

There are several ways to approach the Yijing, and none of them are definitive. You can formulate a proper question by considering the format of the expected answer. If the result is a number, the question is “how much?”; if it’s a date, the question is “when?” But what about the Yijing? The Hexagrams of the Book of Changes, in our interpretation, point to a moment in time and place, a slice of your current situation, something that will inevitably change. With that in mind, a good question, in our view, would be along the lines of “how are things at this moment?” or “what is the current stage of this situation?” It’s also common among Yijing practitioners to avoid overly specific questions, as they may lead to vague answers. Either/or questions can also be tricky, as the Yijing won’t provide a direct answer, but it might help you reflect on aspects of your situation that you might otherwise overlook.

The 3 coins method

You can also use your own coins to consult the YiJing. For each toss, use three coins and translate the results as follows:

Three heads. YANG Changing.

⚊•

Two heads, one tails. YIN.

Two tails, one heads. YANG

Three tails. YIN Changing.

⚋•

Throw the three coins together six times and mark each of the resulting lines on a piece of paper, always from the bottom to the top. Then, use the lookup table to find the corresponding hexagram.

Changing Lines

Changing lines represent an accumulation of either YIN or YANG, which then points to its opposite line, creating a different Hexagram. A YIN changing line becomes YANG, and a YANG changing line becomes YIN. This means both hexagrams are in the process of changing into one another. Sometimes, however there are no changing lines, resulting in a static Hexagram.
